Advisory Committee Members on the Use of the Code Background During the 2001 legislative session, the North Carolina General Assembly adopted a Rehabilitation Code to be implemented as a pilot program throughout the state. The legislators who approved this pilot program believe this codes focus on requirements for existing buildings will be a significant benefit to communities across the state. In particular, the codes unique approach to code enforcement is evident in two ways. First, its provisions focus on conditions peculiar to existing buildings, and second, it is a locally based code. By putting the new code to use for a wide variety of building and project types, the pilot program will identify strengths and weaknesses of the code. To that end, it is critical that property owners, architects, engineers and contractors, and participating code enforcement authorities become familiar with and work with the provisions in the new code. The Advisory Board on Use of the NC Rehabilitation Code The North Carolina Rehabilitation Code Advisory Committee was established under the direction of the North Carolina Department of Insurance to assist Staff in the statewide implementation of the Rehabilitation Code. The Committee communicates regularly to share ideas, promote uniformity and consistency in code use, and develop interpretations regarding the utilization and enforcement of the NC Rehabilitation Code. The Advisory Committee consists of 6 members, appointed by the Building Code Council, representing a geographic cross section of the state. The members consist of 5 jurisdiction members and 1 Department of Insurance staff member.
